I’ve always been spontaneous and outgoing.. I’ve tried lots of things so I’ve got some good life experiences, which is great ‘cause it means I’ve got lots of material to work with as an actor.” – LEONARDO DICAPRIO

Actors are fascinating. What’s even more fascinating is the craft of acting. A lot of people run after fame and money, the stardom that comes with acting, but with TV producers hiring anyone that looks good or the channel with its TRP hungry mindset (Anyone can act), the art is slowly dying. Yes there are exceptions and thank god for people like Irrfan Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. There is still some hope left.

We, at Trend Mantra, compiled a list of things no one tells you when you set out to be an actor.

1)  WORK ON YOUR TALENT

First and foremost, instead of focusing all your energy on looking good, we suggest you learn the craft. You might crack something if you ‘look’ the part but you can only sustain with talent.

2)  FIRST BREAK IS GOING TO BE DIFFICULT

If you don’t have a brother or sister or god father or godmother, it’s going to be really really difficult. You will take more time than others. There will be trial(s) and error(s) but it isn’t impossible. Also, the real struggle starts post your first reel project.

3)  YOU WILL BE UNDERPAID

Let’s frame the sentence again. You will be grossly underpaid on the pretext of being ‘given a chance’. Fret not, pick your battles carefully. Weigh it, see the pros and cons of doing a certain project. If it takes your career forward, do it. Don’t fool yourself and jump right into it.

4)  YOUR LOVE LIFE WILL SUCK

Yes, you will have several people running after you. But sorry to burst your bubble, it only comes with success. For now you will have to deal with your demons, on your own.

a)    NARCISSISM – Most actors suffer from it. Not the best thing ‘cause it’ll get a little too much after a point for your partner. Work on it.

b)    NO STABILITY – Oh so no one told you there would be breaks in between projects? Well, you heard it from us then. There will be rich months and then there will be poor months. Don’t get used to a lifestyle. Stay neutral and you will make it.

c)    TOO MANY GOOD LOOKING PEOPLE AROUND – Your partner might feel insecure. Yes, you might wanna slip and cheat on your partner but not falling for is the good option.

d)    YOUR PARTNER’S PARENTS MIGHT NOT LIKE YOUR PROFESSION – They might ask their kid to break up with you. It’s a volatile profession after all and stability is something parents love. We suggest, look at other options on the side to make money.

5)  BOOKS, MOVIES, PLAYS SHOULD BE YOUR BEST FRIEND

On a day off (there will be more off days at times than working days), invest your time in books, movies and plays. This is your homework and gives you material to think and learn from and in turn makes you a better actor.
